DRAFT PICK:
--DeMar DeRozan, G, 6-6, USC -- Raptors really like his upside. He's a great athlete who has a chance to blossom. But he must work on his shooting and on becoming stronger. FREE AGENT FOCUS: Anthony Parker, coming off his statistically worst season as a Raptor, is an unrestricted free agent but it's highly doubtful he'll be given a starting role on the team next season. However, both he and general manager Bryan Colangelo are optimistic some new deal can be worked out.
Of the other free agents -- Joey Graham, Jake Voskuhl, Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Carlos Delfino (whose restricted free agency rights the Raptors still hold since he played last season in Russia) -- it's likely that only one will be back with the team in October.
PLAYER NEWS:
--F Chris Bosh already has said he won't consider a contract extension this summer. But that doesn't mean Bosh, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent next summer, will end up doing that. The NBA released a memo that the salary cap, in these troubling economic times, could drop to somewhere between $50.4 million and $53.6 million next summer after being at $57.7 million this coming season. That means that, if Bosh were to opt out of his contract next summer, he likely would have to play for less than the $17.15 million he is scheduled to make in 2010-11 if he doesn't opt out.
--G/F Devean George is bringing something to the Raptors that they don't have: championship experience. George, acquired from Dallas in a four-team trade, was on Los Angeles Lakers teams that won titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Until George's acquistion, there wasn't a single player on Toronto's roster to have won a title ring. The Raptors also didn't have a single player ever to have appeared in the NBA Finals. But now they have two in George, who also played for the Lakers in the 2004 Finals, and forward Hedo Turkoglu, whose Magic lost to the Lakers in last season's Finals.
--G Demar DeRozan is not shy on confidence after being taken by the Raptors with the No. 9 pick in the first round. DeRozan expects to get ample playing time as a rookie.
"I think I can fit in great," he said. "I can bring a lot to the team on both ends. Probably be defense and offense. That's my thing -- I try to bring it and just get the team going again."
MEDICAL WATCH:
--F Kris Humphries (broken fibula) has been cleared to begin working out fully.
--G Marcus Banks (toe) is back working out after having surgery.
