PLAYER NEWS: --F Chris Bosh concluded his summer by going to South Africa as part of the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program. He was joined on the trip by fellow NBA All-Stars Dirk Nowitzki, Dwight Howard and Carlos Boozer. "I'm curious about the world," Bosh said before his departure. "It's so big. I'm from Texas and this is what I know, but I want to see what's outside the norm, I want to go places and see how people live."
--F Andrea Bargnani took some heat in his native land when Italy was eliminated from qualifying for September's European Championships in Poland. Bargnani is nicknamed "Il Mago," which means "The Wizard." One Italian sports newspaper wrote Bargnani justified his nickname due to an "innate ability to disappear before the eyes of the crowd." But at least Italy's short summer of international play could make him fresher for Toronto's training camp.
--G Sonny Weems, who won the college slam-dunk contest at Arkansas in 2008, has said he "most definitely" one day will be in an NBA dunk contest. Weems got a taste for the contest while, with Denver last season, he passed the ball to teammate and dunk contestant J.R. Smith.
"I'm a great athlete," Weems said of his jumping ability.
